The neck consists of seven cervical vertebrae in which contain nerve endings called Proprioceptors. These nerve endings have the ability to tell the body parts what relationship it has to control pressure, movement of bones, tissues, and joints. A normal neck range of motion is very important for long-lasting flexibility. Neck movements include flexion, extension, and rotation. If you are unable to move your neck freely, it can result in chronic neck pain and spinal degeneration that is leading to severe back problem and should be looked at by San Diego Chiropractors.
Moving your neck is not the only way to tell if there’s a problem. When rotating your neck and hearing a crushing noise, like glass breaking, or a grinding sound that is a sign as well that bones, tissues, and joints are not moving properly in the neck and mostly likely there’s scar tissues. If there’s a shooting pain while rotating your neck it might be a sign of a pinched nerves that is not allowing you to move freely. Limited range of motion is not normal.
Take a look in the mirror and try the following steps to be aware if your neck has it’s range of motion. Flexion: Bend your head towards your chest, try to touch your chin to your chest. Acceptable range would be 40-60 degrees. Extension: Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Acceptable range is 45-70 degrees. Rotation: Turn your head to the right and left, you should turn far enough that your chin is almost aligned with your shoulder. Acceptable range is 60-80 degrees.
